| Welcome to the group. I have a Nanday conure that I have owned now for over 16 years. He has spent many a night out in a tree. The longest he was gone was 4 days but he never went more than a few houses from where we lived. I hope you find your baby. |

| Cockatoos are great pets if you can get along with the screaming they do. Most do not realize what they are getting into when they adopt or but a cockatoo but if you are patient and can train your cockatoo to not scream a lot it is really worth it They are great birds. |

| why do so many cockatoos end up for adoption or rehoming? Do they really not belong in homes or captivity or are owners unprepared for what they're getting and give up? |

| Hi my name is Renee I have a beautiful 2 yr old male Goffin I have had him since he was 6mo old- he is very active and he gets his yearly vet cks, he is on a pellet diet-plus veggies- he is in great feather and has no bad habits- loves his shower- gets alot of interaction with us- his cage is in the living/dinning rm where he is involved with his family- he gets out to play reg. and has a hugh cage with toys. Well Ozzy has started to scream!HORRIBLE! I mean he has always been vocal mornings nights when we first come home- ya know normal stuff, but here lately he is screaming- and horrible sounds like I have never heard him do before. And it will be for long period of times. I live in an apt. just me and my hubby- and Im afraid if he does not stop I will have to get rid of him. Please if anyone can give some suggestions to try- Iv tried ignoring him- leaving the rm( makes him scream worse) I tell him No and turn my back- Get close to his cage and say quitely indoor voice Ozzy. Plz help |

I just joined this wonderful group yesteray and I am not sure if it is ok to post this or not ...if not I apologize But we lost our Dusty Conure Parrot Petey in early July his info & picture is posted on www.thepetrescue.com under Nevada and then under Other Pets. We are still holding out hopes of Petey one day coming home and I was wondering what is the longest time anyone has heard that a Conure has been lost then came back on his own? I have heard that some have returned to their own homes (backyards or in same vicinity) on their own? I have done everything I can think of to get him back (flyers, walked thesurrounding areas, went to as many vets and shelters , put ad in RJ & online sites, etc. )as I possibly can ) so at this point I think my only hope is that he will return on his own. If not hopefully someone has found him and just loves him way to much to give him back.thank you for your time & for checking out Peteys picture & info. Michelle Marina |

My three (3) year old male Eclectus is a terrific Parrot, until we are away from home for a few days. Then, regardless of what we do, including but not limited to having him boarded at his Veternarian, after about three (3) or four (4) days he 'bites off' all of his wing and tail flight feathers. On return from our trip, we paid for the Boarding, then paid the Veternarian to remove feather shafts, so that he would then regrow his lost feathers. He is normally quite happy with is 200# cage, empty saucer dish to ballance on, large glass dish, 4in deep, in which he baths. But, on our return, he is quite 'angry' at us for a few hours or a day. We continue to look for a cure. Our only successes have been a neighbor grade school girl who would read and sing to our Parrot, or were we to not leave him for more than three (3) days. The girl grew up, so that is no longer an option, and we can't take our Parrot with us. We tried that and the Boarder Check took him to bird prison. |

General Category / Bird Advice and Help / How to start?

Hello! I'm wondering how you start on the road to rescue? I am very happily owned by a 1yr old cockatiel named Sunshine. I would like to add another member to our family, so I've been haunting bird forums for information and care tips. It breaks my heart to see the pictures of rescued birds. With such long lifespans it's horrible to realize that people buy these beings and then tire of them after a few years (sometimes a few months) Therefore if I do add to my family, I'll only rehome/rescue a bird. BTW, I'm NOT in a hurry. I want to know EVERYTHING before I start. So please don't think I'm only here to get a bird. My question to you is how do I get started? I bought a med/large iron cage off of Craigslist. So I'm set up physically for a bird. Where do I go now? Is there a place I can volunteer at? Love, Ang |
