Bird Adoption is
when the bird officially becomes the property of the new owner and as
such you will understand that we take this process very seriously
indeed. Our process of identifying and accepting someone as a
potential adopter is stringent and we have high standards. This is
only fair on the bird and on the owner who has had to, often through
painful circumstances, had to offer their bird up for adoption. You
would expect nothing less if it were your own bird being adopted.
To be considered as a potential adopter, please download and print the
Application Form and return it to us at the address on the
Contacts
page. We will review it and get in touch to arrange for a home visit.
After adoption we will make further contact with you to ascertain that
the bird is happy and healthy and that you are comfortable with the new
arrival.
Note: the Application Form is in Microsoft Word format. |

Cockatoo, Medium Sulphur Crested
(Male) |
"Monroe" is a beautifully feathered Medium Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
with lots of personality and a mind of his own. He is a very special
bird, whose placement we are pursuing in cooperation with the
Wasatch Avian Education Society (Utah).
Currently Monroe is being
fostered in Nevada. He is a retired performance bird, and he will be
a delight in the right situation. He is, however, prone to jealousy,
which can lead to aggression. He seems to prefer male humans, but he
gets along with other birds.
Unfortunately, since his performing
days, Monroe has had 6 homes in 6 years. In each instance Monroe
picked out one favorite family member (usually the male of the
house), and he became aggressive with other members of the
household. Monroe is loving and affectionate, but he will test
limits. Though he likes light-duty social situations and going out
and about with his favorite human, his jealousy with a second person
in the house may remain a concern. We believe Monroe would be best
placed in a single-person (preferably male) household, where he can
enjoy life as a one-man bird, though the person may not necessarily
be a one-bird man. While he is generally a calm bird and not
excessively vocal, Monroe is very alert to changes in his
environment. Someone with large parrot (and specifically cockatoo)
experience is preferable.
Health screening was normal.

Blue and Gold Macaw,
(Male) |
Shown here right after a bath,
Louie-Louie is a handsome blue and gold macaw estimated to be
approximately 30 years old. A one-time pet shop pet, he was then a
breeder and more recently retired into pethood again. He is an
"experienced" bird, and though he does talk, he's otherwise
relatively quiet for a macaw. He has a very pleasant attitude, but
being somewhat new to his status as a pet the second time around,
he's still a bit to himself. His foster family is working on that. A
wing injury within the last year or so has left him with a stiff
wing, but he gets around quite well. Following a beak reshaping
(which he may need periodically), he's getting back in the groove of
self-grooming. Because of his injury, however, he may always need
just a little help with his preening. His appetite is great, and he
likes to try new things. He also likes to be part of the family and
he is very alert and observant. His foster family says that he
watches food preparation with such interest that it's almost as
though he's trying to learn how to cook! Louie will be wonderful in
a loving home that understands he's a very special bird with special
needs. All health testing returned normal.
Adopted.

However, her prior owners were not convinced that they were giving Molly the attention she needed, and she had become rather vocal. Molly is quite sweet and enjoys being with her human flock.
Ideally, she would be placed in a home where she could remain a flighted pet. Her diet is somewhat limited, and her foster parents are working on improving her eating habits.

African Grey |
“Webster” so-named for her
extensive vocabulary, is a 33 year-old female Congo African Grey,
whose main person, a man, died approximately 9 years ago. The man’s
wife no longer feels that she can offer Webster the attention and
quality of life that Webster deserves. It is obvious that Webster
has been loved a lot, and she is quite affectionate once you get to
know her, though typical of most African Greys, she is quite wary at
first. Very recently, Webster plucked her feathers, but we believe
this to have been episodic and are working with her toward feather
restoration and weight gain. She wolf whistles and blows kisses,
loves to dance, says “hello,” when the phone rings, and “Come on in”
when the doorbell rings, among other things. She is accustomed to a
pelleted diet, supplemented with fruits and vegetables and a
high-quality seed mixture. Webster comes with two cages—a beautiful
play-top cage and one that is more a nighttime or carrying cage—and
her favorite toys. Webster’s health screening results indicated the
presence of e-coli, for which she is being treated, but were
otherwise normal.

Yellow
Naped Amazon |
Kauai
(pronounced “Kah-why”) is a DNA sexed male, yellow-naped Amazon,
approximately 9 years old. His owners have had some life changes
and no longer feel that they are able to afford him the attention
he needs and deserves. Kauai talks and sings snippets of several
favorite songs at times; he also engages in conversational
chatter. Kauai has lived in a mixed flock, though has his own
cage. Typical of male Amazons, Kauai is a rather confident bird
that would likely prove a handful for someone without previous
Amazon experience. His previous owner describes him as a “crown
prince,” if not the king. He loves to chew, and must be kept well
supplied. He likes “out” time, and will grant himself leave if his
cage is not secured. Though fascinated by the female voice, he
seemed to prefer being handled by the man of the house. His
feather is excellent, probably as the result of his excellent diet
of pellets, cooked food, seed and fresh fruits and veggies daily.
Kauai comes with an appropriately sized cage. He has had regular
vet checks; however his rehoming vet check is pending.

Blue
and Gold Macaw
|
Whoopi
Goldbird
is a 10-year old DNA-sexed male blue and gold macaw, whose owners no
longer feel able to give Whoopi the time and attention he deserves.
He has lived in the same home for his entire life, and he’s a
charmer with a fairly extensive vocabulary. He also enjoys noisy
kisses, and often he will wave. He is accustomed to recreational
time out of his cage and sometimes will 0let you know that it’s time
for play by saying, “Wanna come out.” He is well behaved. Whoopi is
handsome and in excellent feather. He has cohabited with other
birds, all in separate cages; he was the largest bird in the flock.
Whoopi is accustomed to an excellent diet of pellets, cooked food,
seed and fresh fruits and vegetables daily, and a fairly good
variety of “people food.” He enjoys many different kinds of nuts.
Whoopi enjoys shower baths. He comes with a beautiful cage that he
quite likes. He has had regular vet checks; however his rehoming vet
check is pending.

Black
Headed Caique |
Kabuki
is 9 year old DNA-sexed female black-headed caique that has lived
in the same home since she was a baby. Her owners, who felt that
they could no longer give her the time and attention she deserved,
felt that it would be best to rehome Kabuki. Like most caiques,
she is very animated, playful and confident. Her previous owner
describes her as "ridiculously fearless." She has lived with other
birds, several of which were much larger than she. Kabuki is in
perfect feather and enjoys frequent showers with a spray bottle,
but sometimes plucks her leg feathers seasonally. She is
accustomed to an excellent diet of pellets, cooked food, seed and
fresh fruits and vegetables daily. She enjoys peanuts and cracked
almonds as treats. She has had regular vet checks throughout her
entire life. Though she does not have an extensive vocabulary,
Kabuki says a few things and likes to chatter, especially in the
morning to greet the world. She can get very intense about her
toys, and one of her enjoyments is “cruising,” especially on
countertops. Kabuki comes with a very nice cage that has been her
home for her entire life. Kabuki's rehoming vet check is pending.

African Grey |
Yoohoo
is a 10-year old DNA-sexed female African Grey, who hails from
Hawaii. She has been in one home throughout her entire life.
Yoohoo is a robust and very intelligent bird with an extensive
vocabulary; however, recently she has been over-preening. Her
owners no longer feel that they are able to give Yoohoo the time
and attention she deserves. Yoohoo, who comes with a nice cage,
has lived in a mixed flock. Clearly, she’s an “experienced” bird,
who is well behaved when allowed outside of her cage. Yoohoo, who
has had regular vet checks, enjoys an excellent and varied diet of
pellets, cooked food, seed and fresh fruits and veggies daily. She
also likes pomegranate and an occasional chicken bone from which
she removes the marrow. Though she’s not a wood chewer, she likes
toys with bells. She likes to “get away from it all” occasionally
in her cage, which will accompany her, and appreciates being
covered at night. Yoohoo’s rehoming vet check is pending.

Quaker Parakeet |
TuTu
is a 9-year old DNA-sexed female normal Quaker parakeet, whose
owners do not feel that they are any longer able to give her the
time and attention she deserves. She has known only one home. In
recent years, TuTu has begun to pluck the feathers on her chest
seasonally. Otherwise, she is a very handsome girl, who is quite
content to sit on top of her cage at times throughout the day.
However, TuTu can fly, and she will fly if even just a few of her
feathers grow back, so she must be supervised carefully during time
out of her cage. TuTu has an excellent diet of pellets, cooked food,
seed and fresh fruits and veggies daily. She does talk a little,
when she’s in the mood, and she can also be coquettish. Though she
has others, her favorite toy is a teddy bear that she has had for
her entire life. TuTu comes with a generously sized cage that has
been her home for her entire life.
